Top 5 – Mexico Soccer Teams

Mexico has not been very successful at the national team level. They have only reached the World Cup quarterfinals twice (both in World Cups that were held in Mexico). But, Mexico’s soccer teams gradually became stronger and are now considered a formidable force on American soil as well.

I had planned to rank the top five Mexican soccer teams. However, I didn’t want to do that as it might cause trouble with fans. For example, a fan might live score ask why a team is ranked above another team, even though they have won more championships. These are the top five most important Mexican soccer teams, as ranked alphabetically:

Mexico Soccer Teams – Club America

Club America was established in 1916. It is one of the oldest professional clubs Mexico has. However, the first league title was not won until 1956-1966. They currently hold 10 national championships. This is second only to Chivas de Guadalajara who has won 11 titles over their history. They are Mexico’s most successful soccer team from a silverware perspective, and Chivas de Guadalajara is America’s historical nemesis. A match between them is something the whole country is looking forward to.

Club America is credited with discovering and highlighting players like Enrique Borja (Cuauhtemoc Blanco), Carlos Hermosillo (Carl Hermosillo), Pavel Pardo. Zizinho, Claudio Lopez. Ivan Zamorano.

Mexico Soccer Teams – Chivas de Guadalajara

Although the club is officially called Club Deportivo Guadalajara (the goats), every Mexican soccer fan knows them as Chivas. Chivas is Mexico’s most successful soccer team, with 11 league titles. They trail arch-nemesis America only by one title. They are also well-liked for their Mexican-only policy. This means that they don’t use foreigners and only focus on Mexican players.

Their popularity extends far beyond Mexico’s borders and into the United States where Chivas USA was founded. It is the Mexican Chivas that are responsible for the launching of players like Salvador Reyes and Omar Bravo, Claudio Suarez or Juan Palencia, Luis Garcia, Luis Garcia, Luis Garcia, Luis Garcia, Carlos Hermosillo, and Gonzalo Pineda.

Mexico Soccer Teams – Pachuca

Pachuca, the oldest Mexican soccer club, was founded in 1901. However, it has only been competitive for the last few decades. Pachuca has been a major force in Mexican soccer, winning the Primera Division five times in the past 8 years and the CONCACAF Champions Cup twice in 2002 and 2007.

Jared Borgetti and Jaime Correa were some of the most prominent players to have played for Pachuca.

Mexico Soccer Teams – Pumas

The team was closely related to UNAM, Mexico’s largest university. They were later renamed UNAM Pumas. However, their official name is Club Universidad Nacional A.C. Although they don’t have the same history of other top Mexican soccer clubs, the Pumas were founded in 1954. They won 5 league champions, 3 CONCACAF Cups and 1 Interamerican Cup.

The most significant players to have worn the Pumas logo on their shirts during the fifty-year history of the club are Enrique Borja and Hugo Sanchez. Jorge Campos, Alberto Aspe. Luis Garcia. Esteban Solari. Emerson. Ailton da Silva. Dario Veron.

Mexico Soccer Teams – Toluca

Toluca, which won 8 titles in the past eight years, was a strong force among the Mexican soccer teams. Since Toluca was founded in 1917, they have been known for being an offensive team that focuses on the attacking players while ignoring the defensive. This philosophy had a double-edged sword as Toluca fluctuated between titles and relegation places in the 60s, 70s.

Today, this aggressive mentality is much less visible and Toluca’s game is more tactical. Toluca’s red-and-white shirt was worn by many notable players, including Zinha, Pedro Romero and Enzo Trossero.
